For several days now, WND has been hounding Barack Obama's campaign about a statement he made July 2 in Colorado Springs – a statement that blew my mind, one that has had me scratching my head ever since. In talking about his plans to double the size of the Peace Corps and nearly quadruple the size of AmeriCorps and the size of the nation's military services, he made this rather shocking (and chilling) pledge: "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded." Now, since I've never heard anyone inside or out of government use the phrase "civilian national security force" before, I was more than a little curious about what he has in mind. Is it possible I am the only journalist in America who sought clarification on this campaign promise? What does it mean? If we're going to create some kind of national police force as big, powerful and well-funded as our combined U.S. military forces, isn't this rather a big deal?.... When he was done with his speech I got in line to ask him a question. When my time came, my question was; 'Senator Obama; I work with disabled veterans throughout the VA Hospital system, what is your plan for our veterans, especially our disabled veterans who use the VA Hospitals for their care.  I stated we need mandatory funding for our VA system to ensure the care is available when needed, especially in light of the current situation in Iraq and the numbers of troops who are coming home with severe disabilities.' He told one of his aide's to get my name, blew me off, did not answer my question and I never heard from him or the aide again.  Is this who we want as our 'Commander in Chief'?... This year's presidential campaign, meanwhile, has many feeling uncertain. With deep political divisions over the war in Iraq and economic turmoil at home, the US is at a crucial juncture this Fall. Our choice of a president is weighing heavily on us all. And then there is the rising threat of Iran....  If our next President is not resolute enough to confront this threat in strength, we are at risk of a nuclear war with serious consequences to Israel and the world.  Yet this is not a time to be discouraged! This is the time to participate in our democratic government by voicing our opinions to our leaders and candidates, and voting in line with our convictions.  More importantly, now is the time to pray! We must come together, humble ourselves and pray for our leaders, and for revival in our churches and communities.
