Names of 1967 Crew Members, as remembered by Barry Lebens

From: Barry Lebens [blebens@netzero.net

Whew!  I'm thinking, but they may come slowly.  Since I first got onto the web, er, via Compuserve, in 1991, I have tried to locate a Don Gaddas, or it could be Gattas. (Jim Santos remembers Gaddis) He and I hung out and I even went to visit him and his wife in Colorado.  No success with either.

And there was a Ron Roux, or Rouex, who may have been a ET1, or it could be he was an EM1 who taught me how to be a qualified junior controller.  (Jim Santos remembers him as EM1)  I saw him after leaving the Diodon when he was being discharged, normally, going through Treasure Island. Seems that the Senior Controller during the fire was of a Filipino (sp) decent. (Jim Santos remembers a Filipino EM1)

The only Chiefs I can put a name to is Brown.  Brownie???  Old guy then, black, (er, African American), big (fat), could have been the COB, but that is only a guess as nothing points to that as a real fact. (Jim Santos does not remember him as the COB.  See photo of crew from January, 1967)

Lt. Carlier was the OOD on the maneuvering watch leaving Point Loma.  When he ordered "single all lines", he removed his wedding ring from his left hand.

Grimes was as you said, a Radioman, striker to 3rd class.  Gibbons sounds right for the storekeeper striker.  Kertz and Stanley Swedbloom are both correct for the T-rooms, but ranks, your guess is as good as mine.  Stan had this big mustache.  Handlebar?

Sweet III was the CO, but the XO, I'm not sure about Doliver.  No other officers click.  If I had my complete service record, I could be positive about the CO's name because he did give me a "Captains Mast" for missing movement.  Remember getting 30 days restriction and having to dive the tubes and bilges. (Jim Santos remembers that Capt. Sweet III was replaced during WestPac and that we returned with another CO, whose name I cannot recall.  XO Doliver was a friend of Lollyd Bucher, I think, who was Captain of the Pueblo, which was captured by North Korea during our WestPac.)

Whew, that's some stuff that hasn't been around for a long, long time.  Not sure if much helps, but there it is.

As for what you said you were going to look in to for my September CA vacation, thanks, anything you can come up with will be fine.  Maybe we can get together for a lunch, or a dinner, you, me, us, whatever.
