LT P.J. Hannifin, USN, relieved LCDR Conwell as commanding officer on 15 January 1955. From February to August 1955, DIODON underwent a regularly scheduled overhaul at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard.

Upon completion of the overhaul, the ship sailed to Acapulco, Mexico, on a shakedown cruise. She returned to San Diego on 5 September and resumed her training schedule.
