USS Diodon (SS-349) History

1950 (provided by Don Remily, EM2(SS))

LCDR G.A. PALMER, U5N, relieved LCDR BELL as commanding officer in July 1950 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, where the ship was undergoing repair. In September, DIODON was ordered to proceed to the Far East via Pearl Harbor and Guam, to support United Nations operations in Korea. While at Guam, DIODON distinguished herself when her crew rescued six aviators from the sea after two aircraft crashed during training exercises.

The ship arrived in Japan in October 1950 and operated in the Far East until January 1951, at which time she returned to San Diego via Pearl Harbor.
